Each man kills the thing he loves (Querelle) – Jeanne Moreau

“She was happy, and perfectly in line with the tradition of those women they used to call “ruined,” “fallen,” feckless, bitches in heat, ravished dolls, sweet sluts, instant princesses, hot numbers, great lays, succulent morsels, everybody’s darlings . . . “

— Jean Genet (Querelle)

The lyrics of the song that Jeanne Moreau sings are from Oscar Wilde’s “The Ballad of Reading Gaol,” which was written in 1897 while in exile after his release from Reading Gaol prison. The line “Yet each man kills the thing he loves” was inspired by the hanging of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards, who was convicted of slitting his wife’s throat.

From 1930 to 1968, a set of censorship guidelines popularly known as the Hayes Code limited screen kisses to no more than three seconds.  Through very intricate blocking, which made actors Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman terribly uncomfortable and required numerous takes to shoot, Alfred Hitchcock was able to dance around the restriction and film a kiss that lasted nearly two and a half minutes. In this clip, the Master of Suspense reveals to director Francois Truffaut the inspiration behind the cinema’s “most intimate and erotic kiss” from his 1946 film, Notorious.
