Radley Metzger on Russ Meyer, Playboy and Censorship in America

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is currently running a retrospective on erotic cinema director Radley Metzger. The series “This Is Softcore: The Art Cinema Erotica of Radley Metzger” goes from August 7-13 and features eight of the director’s softcore films. Metzger took erotic cinema to the level of high art during the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s by bringing a literary backbone, sumptuous production design and a celebration of sex as a “unifying force” to the genre. In the following clip from the August 7 post-screening Q&A, Metzger discusses the impact his contemporaries, Russ Meyer and Hugh Hefner, had on the erosion of censorship in America:
